Christmas Party

      by Chris Banks

This punch is not as strong as you might think –
It’s rather short on rum and full of fruit,
So I can manage one more tiny drink.

And when the hostess gives a knowing wink
I charge my glass; my voice cannot be mute.
“This punch is not as strong as you might think!”

What harm in just one more, filled to the brink?
What harm in speech that’s hard to execute?
So I can manage one more tiny drink.

I’m feeling fine; I’m wholly in the pink.
My argument you really can’t refute –
This punch is not as strong as you might think.

Although my eyes now tend to roll and blink,
When offered more my hearing is acute,
So I can manage one more tiny drink.

A strange remark as carpetwards I sink:
A distant voice compares me to a newt.
This punch is not as strong as you might think,
So I can manage one more diny trink…….
