Strawberry Wish

                 by Gay Horton

Simply shower me with sugar.
Held safe in your hand, softly sprinkle the shiny crystals
until my red heart is swathed, submerged
beneath their conquering weight.

Cover me with cloud-light Chantilly cream swirls that climb
toward heaven and crest
like the cupolas of Crete,
the citadel towers of Cairo
and on my rosy curves make contrast.

Dip me deep in the devilish meltings of your dark chocolate.
Dance with the drips of Aphrodite’s dowry
and dandle me with your eyes closed
before you devour.

Make mine a sarong of syrup.
Let it seep and slide
into my softest places, there to shine,
stickily golden and sensuous.

Bathe me in buttermilk.
Behold as my floating beauty blends and blurs with it.
Bring me to the brink where
I will roll and ride,
blushing with the peaks and troughs
of a final blitz.

                                     Now taste the summer!
